Managed to watch 3 of my 4 netflix this week, so I thought I would give some quick mini-reviews:
- Hellboy was much more enjoyable than I thought it would be. It was well done and amusing and all around a good time. The special effects were good, but not overshadowing of the story.
- Hidalgo was also enjoyable. It was pretty much a good old time western. Lots of horses, bad guns, gun fights, etc. I think Viggo did a pretty nice job playing a cowboy type. Omar Sharif was excellent as always. It was pretty predictable, but then what western isn’t?
- Croupier had a lot of promise that it just didn’t live up to. The story was nice and it was well done, but the main character never really made me care anything about him. He just sort of sat there and looked out. I think making the main character more likable and emotional would have helped it out a lot. I would suggest avoiding this movie unless you have a lot of time to kill.
I wasn’t too sure we needed a new remake to The Manchurian Candidate, but decided to see it anyhow (thanks to Netflix.
It was surprisingly good. They adapted it pretty well to a more modern setting. Hollywood usually seems pretty bad about remaking old movies. They either try and just remake it exactly as the older version (then why are they bothering? Probably a director that really loved the Original), or change
it so dramatically that it has nothing to do with the Orig version except the name (possibly an attempt to get people to see it who know the first version).
This Version had just enough changes to make it “feel” modern, and enough changes to make you want to watch to see who or what was going on. Denzel Washington did an excellent job. I would recommend this movie.
The BBQ last night went pretty well. Had a good turnout and some good conversation. I made some roasted elephant garlic to spreading on crackers, and it was quite yummy. I also broke out some many year old mead that had been aging in the basement that was quite yummy. I forgot to take any pictures of the festivities. Oh well.
Today I was meeting tkil and delirumdreams for the 1:45 showing of mirrormask. I didn’t get to the theatre until about 2pm. The stupid worthless broncos were having a game and I25 was a total parking lot. Since I don’t usually go down I25 on sunday afternoons, it wasn’t something I looked up beforehand. Yet another reason to loathe the broncos.
Mirrormask was pretty good. I need to see it again so I can see the first 5minutes, but I still enjoyed it. As others mentioned the visuals were very very well done. The story wasn’t great, but it was ok as a framework to hang the visuals on. I can see owning a copy of it so I could watch it a number of times and catch lots of things I missed just because the visuals are so rich. So, not a great movie, but a good one.
