      Faction Overview

For seven hundred years the triremes, caravels and galleons of the Serene Republic of Talao Berde have carried goods across the Pleiadean Seas. Strategically placed athwart the Perseid Straits that separate the western and eastern oceans, the Island of Talao Berde has turned back challenges from empires and barbarians alike and today forges ahead in the newly competitive, globalized economy.

But it is not all business in Republic. There are also the lustiest fleshpots and loosest slot machines to be had in the Southern Hemisphere. As long as you bring your wallet, you're assured of a really good time in Talao Berde.

The People
The Island of Talao Berde has been inhabited since time immemorial—archaelogical evidence shows that Stone Age populations lived on the Talao Berde beaches nearly 30,000 years ago, where they amused themselves with a primitive form of kino.

Ethnically, the island is a polygot mix of all the major races, and recently researchers have determined that the average Talao Berdean can trace descent to every continent within four generations. Five major languages are spoken on the island (including a native patois that mingles most of them, Frapanglischese) and linguists aver that most Talao Berdeans can ask for your credit card number in at least fifteen languages and dialects.

The History
The Island was the seat of the Aerovignian Empire, a maritime power that dominated the coasts of Mylantium until a natural cataclysm in 953 caused its capital to become skyborne. The island then divided into a series of feudal fiefs that knew no unity until they came under threat from the Dacostan Caliphate in the sixth century. Briefly unified as the Aerovignian League, the cities fought off three seaborne invasions, four blockades, and two attempts to break the bank at the island's premiere casino. The Dacostan Sultana Irene IV finally ended the Dacostan attempt to conquer the Island after being personally routed by seven Aerovignian ninja-gigolos who invaded her palace in 1158.

The waning of Dacostan power led to a fracturing of power on the Island, and it came to have an ill-deserved reputation for brigandage and piracy during the subsequent centuries. Six centures ago, however, the seven principal island chieftans united their fiefs into the present-day Serene Republic: the longest-surviving constitutional regime in the world today.

The Cities
Talao Berde's long and inviting coastline means that every major population center on the island has a deep harbor capacity, and four ports that were once mere villages have grown into major metropolises: Applause (the capital city), Chatterton, Excelsior, and Gotterspall. But major oceanic trade is handled even by the small port-village of Idcusp. Other villages on the island: Kollapsope, Miskmask, Orbituary, Levant, and Salsa Lido. The Government
Executive power is exercised by a Dogo-Primo who is elected to a seven-year term by plebescite from the hereditary seven-member Grand Council, which in turn acts as Legislature and Supreme Law Court. The current Dogo-Primo is Count Svengist Gotterspall.
